total does not pass to confirmation e-mail

The TOTAL shows up in my managecart file, but when i checkout and send the e-mail of the order to the seller and the buyer, the word TOTAL appears but not the amount. Why is the $TOTAL variable not capturing the amount? I haven't altered the code that way.
